Web Hosting Definitions
Shared Web Hosting - A service that provides
you with the ability to have a "Web-presence" without the cost and time
of maintaining your own Web server and access.
The site is located on one of the Web host's servers - the equivalent
of leasing office space. A certain portion of the building is yours,
with your name on the door, and you can rely on the building manager
(the Web host) for security, maintenance and facilities management.
This is called "shared" hosting because your home page has its own domain
name (www.YourBusinessName.com), and appears to exist as a stand-alone
server - its location is invisible to visitors.
Domain -- An InterNIC (Internet Network
Information Center) domain hosted in a Nevada Bell Internet Services
account, i.e., yourdomainname.com.
Domain Affiliation -- Domain
Affiliation is a subset of Domain Aliasing where the same Domain Name
with a different suffix, or extentsion, can point to the same Web site.
For example, assume you register :
www.YourBusinessName.com
with Nevada Bell Internet Services. You may also register :
www.YourBusinessName.Net or www.YourBuinesssName.org
through us, and the .Net and .Org domain names will point to the Web
site content you have on www.YourBusinessName.com . The second two Domain
Names will incur a charge of $70 for two years with Network Solutions
billed to you directly by e-mail. The benefit is your unique domain
name is reserved with the additional extensions of .NET and .ORG. so
customers will be directed to your web site no matter the extension.
Subdomain -- Subdomains are a unique way that Nevada Bell Internet
Services allows you to have a personalized Web address without the expense
of registering a domain with the InterNIC. You may also want to use
a subdomain if the name you want to use is already registered with the
InterNIC and is not available.
For example, for the domain Web address of www.nvbell.net, the subdomain
Web address is hosting.nvbell.net. Your Web address would be www.yourbusinessname.hosting.nvbell.net
and an e-mail address for you would be you@yourbusinessname.hosting.nvbell.net.
Domain Name System (DNS) -- Domain Name System
is a database that translates an IP address into a domain name. This
is the standard by which names e.g. www.YourBusinessName.com are translated
into numbers, e.g., 123.123.12.2 so the Internet knows the server locations
where the address is located. A system of DNS servers located throughout
the Internet handles Internet connections and the routing of e-mail
Administration -- Nevada Bell Internet
Services Administration, included with all plans, gives you complete
control of the billing and settings of your domain as well as access
to logs and statistical analysis, all online and in real time. For instance,
you can instantly increase traffic allotment, create and delete e-mail
and dial-up accounts, and add Web space. A detailed logging report lets
you determine which features are analyzed, such as hits per hour and
originating domain, resulting in a truly customized view into your site.
Nevada Bell Internet Services will notify you via e-mail of potential
resource issues such as being low on disk space, allowing you to make
changes on-demand.
Site Traffic
VDE Resource Units -- The way that usage
of the Nevada Bell Internet Services Virtual Domain Environment is measured
and allocated. VDE Resource Units represent the amount of system resources
required to perform a task. The VDE is a shared resource of the Nevada
Bell Internet Services platform and uses a pricing model that follows
that of other shared resources, such as disk storage, User IDs, and
Web site traffic. All hosting plans include a generous allocation of
allowable usage per month. Administrators have the opportunity to add
more resources as needed. If a domain's resource usage is on a trend
to exceed its monthly allocation, the Administrator is sent an e-mail
alert to that fact. VDE resource allocation is over the month, allowing
for day-to-day spikes that may occur as people access your site, rather
than enforcing daily limits and penalizing your site's success.
Microsoft FrontPage 2000 -- FrontPage 2000
is a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) Web page editor by Microsoft.
To use FrontPage to create and maintain your Web site, your hosting
service must install "extension" programs for your account. Nevada Bell
Internet Services offers FrontPage 2000 to all Web hosting customers.
Microsoft FrontPage Extensions -- Programs
that provide the server side implementation of many FrontPage 2000 features.
FrontPage software communicates with the extensions to direct requests
to FrontPage programs that allow features such as uploading and downloading
files, setting privileges, and browse-time WebBot components. FrontPage
Extension support is available on all Nevada Bell Internet Services
plans.
Custom CGI -- The Nevada Bell Internet Services Virtual Domain
Environment (VDE) gives each domain customer their own UNIX virtual
machine each customer has their own virtually dedicated operating and
file systems. This means Web developers can create complex Common Gateway
Interface (CGI) scripts without security and stability risks and without
requiring a review or approval process.
UNIX Interactive Maintenance Shell -- A
feature of Nevada Bell Internet Services, running under the VDE, that
allows authorized users access to UNIX Shell functionality for Web file
management and testing and debugging of scripts.
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) -- SSL manages
the security of message transmissions via the Internet. The SSL encryption
process makes it extremely difficult for anyone to intercept and read
information between you and your computer (the client) and the server
to which you are making a connection.
