- How long has Pacific Bell Internet been in business?
- Pacific Bell Internet Services became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Pacific Bell as of July 1, 1995.
- How does the Pacific Telesis merger with SBC impact Pacific Bell Internet?
- The merger between SBC Communications and Pacific Telesis combines two outstanding telecommunications companies into a single corporation uniquely positioned to thrive in the new, dynamic telecommunications industry.
While the corporate headquarters for the combined company is in San Antonio, Texas, the company will maintain headquarters of Pacific Bell and Nevada Bell in California and Nevada. The headquarters for the Internet company will remain in California, as will headquarters for the company's long distance company, international operations, and a new company to provide integrated administrative and support services.
- What is Pacific Bell Internet's content strategy?
- Pacific Bell Internet knows what it does well, and where it would be better to work with partners. We believe there is a wealth of content available through the Internet and what most users need is assistance in finding it. For this reason, we are following a two-fold content strategy:
First, while we are not developing original content, we are developing navigation guides available only to our subscribers to assist them in finding the best content on the Web, with a regional and global focus.
Second, we have announced partnerships with premier content providers on the Web to provide premium content to customers throughout California. Finally, we are talking to a variety of other potential partners and expect to announce additional content partnerships.
- Is Pacific Bell Internet service available in Nevada?
- Yes, Pacific Bell Internet's service is called Nevada Bell Internet in the state of Nevada.
- Who are Pacific Bell Internet's competitors?
- We see three primary classes of competitors including "traditional" Internet Service Providers, online service providers, and other local or long distance carriers. In each case, we can offer customers unique benefits leveraging our position as California's largest communications company. These benefits include pricing plans designed for California users; a wide range of Internet access options; reliable and fast network connections; superior customer service; and the convenience of adding your Internet charges to your Pacific Bell bill.
- What about TV cable companies offering even faster Internet access?
- Several cable companies around the country are testing fast Internet access using cable modem technology. Because this technology requires significant upgrades to the cable system, deployment of services has been much slower than anticipated, and standards are still being developed. Some cable companies are offering the service on a commercial basis, but only in a few neighborhoods where the system has been upgraded.
In the meantime, Pacific Bell offers ISDN service to over 95% of homes and businesses in our territory, and we offer ISDN Internet access from all of our local dial-up access points statewide. And for businesses or other customers who need a higher speed connection to the Internet, we offer dedicated access from 56 kbps up to 45 Mbps.
